Which is better...a 360 w/ auto, or the Buick 350 w/ auto? (reliability, power, etc.)

Hey,I've had both,and I would much rather have a 350.If you are going to do a swap,Why not look for a a.m.c. 258 6 cyl?Will bolt right in.

Just getting more ideas...Nobody wants to buy the Jeep, I may be able to keep it after-all, and if I do, I want the 3-speed to go bye, bye. I found some FSJ's today with both drivetrains still intact, so I would be able to do either swap. If I do keep the Wag, I plan to have the body off of it soon for general cleaning, replacing, rewiring, etc anyway, and I thought 'you know, while I'm here, may as well change engines...'

If you've got a spicer t/case,you could bolt up a g.m. turbo 400 from a fsj. Then go with any engine you like, using any adapter plate.as far as I remember.how much were you asking for it ?

I was asking $1000 for it. After looking at the numbers in my '71 motor manual, the Buick sounds a whole lot mor powerful...is this accurate? Did they put the 9:1 comp motor, or the 11.5:1 motor in these rigs?(probably the 9:1, right?) But in any case, more power...ar, ar, argh.

Arch,
I have done the swap you are talking about and it is a MAJOR job. As far as the 350/360 question, I prefer the 360, hi-po parts for the 350 are just as hard and as expensive as parts for the 360 and the buick has been out of production longer. The buicks in Jeeps were also low compression 2v models. As far as the t/case bolting up to a T400 unless you have the adaptor and input gear from a rig with a T400 you will have to get a kit from Advance Adapters for it to work. My advice for you if you really want to do this swap is to get a later model donor rig and swap the body over. BTW do yo have the ross steering gear located by the cowl? If you do this creates a whole new problem with steering as the column will have to be changed out. I have done this swap (putting V8 in place of 6 cyl, including replacing a Tornado) twice so if you need advice or more details let me know.

Jeepbob, I have indeed found two wags, and if I do the swap, it'll be a complete frame swap. I guess it'll come down to which engine will require less work to get running. (I am sure that either one needs a rebuild...I've got to go out there again and check the motors conditions) We'll see, I may have found different housing arrangements that will allow me to keep/ work on the Wag, and the wife said that if I made it go faster and look better, we could keep it.

The reason the 350 looks more powerful is because the 350 is gross rated and the 360 is NET rated. I believe gross is the power of the engine itself with nothing on it and no load against it... totally useless number if you think about it. Net is the number of everyday use. With the accessories on it, and the load against it. "Horsepower and Torque at the wheels" as its most commonly known as.

I'd go 360.. the 350 has nothing in common with the sbc 350... cept displacement.

Snake you hit the nail right on the head. The buick has the same oil pump problems as the AMC and housings are a lot more expensive if you can find the right one.

Ok, you convinced me..I'll slide the frame of the '72(hopefully not too much work) under the '65. Do ya'll know of many troubles with using that frame/ body combo? Who has the best price on engine rebuild kits for the 360? the only other thing that will be a PIA, is the lack of lift kits for that year...oh well, i guess I'll have to settle(when the time comes) on a Rancho lift kit.

I dunno my '71 350 waggie kicks the crap out of my '81. From my experience (which I'll admit is limited) Buick motors are more friendly to work with.
