When I first got my 87 Grand Wagoneer from my father it was one of the FSJ's that was parked most of the week and not driven a lot. It was mostly driven on the beach and every once in a while on the Parkway. When I got it, it used to have a lot of blow by(oil in the air cleaner). It also used to get like 5 miles to the gallon. After a couple of weeks of daily driving, the blow-by has mysteriously dissapeared(and yes there is oil in there  . Also, I have jumped to like 10 miles to the gallon. Anybody got any ideas as to why my Wag stopped doing this, I was expecting it to get worse. Thanks for any of your ideas. By the way there is no smoke coming out of the tailpipe, oil pressure is perfect, and the truck runs great.

Frozen PCV valve freed itself up. That's my best guess.

 Having a brain fart. This a little embarrasing, but I am at work (Gulf of Mexico) and cannot run out and look at my engine. Where is the PCV on a '88 GW????
Going to get a brain jumpstart/cup-o-coffee....

Let us know when it gets to 20. Then we will really try to figure that one out.LOL. But seriously folks, A combination of Plugged PCV,sticky float, dirty carb, varnish in the carb and how could guess what else. All that daily driving and fresh gasoline probably loosend things back up to where they should be and now it all works like it should. I am sure you put your foot in it a little more than grampa and that was all it needed.

cars dont like to sit ,short trips are no good either. rings may have bewen gummed up too. Marina drove the wag for a week and the steering centering problem that had been a problem for a couple of yrs went away. dont be surprised if the muff/tp go fast. sitting they fill up with water, and a good run heats them up and just blows the baffles right out of it.

pcv is in a hose just to the rear of the carb, drivers side. it should also have a smaller hose going to the middle of the valve.

PCV is my vote---otherwise, I'd have guessed it was out of oil --hee hee!

I thinking that I did not have a PCV, that my oil cap functioned as the PCV.....I guess.....

When a moter sits unused the condinsation that builds up in the intake and exhaust valves will affect milage until the motor runs enough to burn it all out. Thus the increase.
