Just got it today fresh out of the shop. 1988 GW with 112000 miles on it. The color is white with burgandy leather/cord. interior. Heres a list of what I had done to it by my mechanic.
4-235/75/15 gt radials
Oil change and filter(nothing fancy)
replace dextron fluid
tranny pan gasket with filter
muffler & tailpipe(nothing fancy but looks good)
optima yellow top battery
2-valve cover gaskets
front rotors & pads
misc bulbs
state o maine inspection
He charged me 12 hours labor at $48 per totaling 1600 dollars out the door.OK so heres how its driving(my first time with her): It takes a bit to get it started but once its going it idles smoothly. I noticed a belt that was worn and had ALOT of play in it. I was able to pull it right off and it broke. Im not sure why they didnt replace the belts but they need to be!
Around town it ran fairly smooth, when at a light it struggles a bit but doesnt die. When I first give it gas from a stop it hesitates noticably before advancing. What would cause that? It also happens as Im driving at any speed and accelerating- it hesitates then goes good.
Things that dont work or dont work well: Interior dome lights non functioning, rear window key switch non functioning, in dash rear window switch works but the window jams every inch on the way down and up:D , how does the tailgate door handle work? Mine doesnt seem to go in any direction. The door locks(the thing you put the key into to lock/unlock door) doesnt seem to work:( but I live in Maine and I dont even have a key for my house!:D The fuel guage doesnt work, but Ive always got a full tank according to it so that means I never have to fill it, right?
Everything else works mint even the A/C and cruise control! An awsome deal Ive spent $2600 dollars total so far. Next month or two its getting 4'' lift all springs and 33's on the stock rims. Cant wait and Ive already got a comment from an old man who said it was a noble beast!!****YEAH:drivin:

What you need to do is post some pics of the rig! Also, start researching and reading up on the tech section and forums. You can save a lot of $$ doing some work yourself! That would mean more money to put into your lift and other upgrades!!! Oh, welcome to the madness!

When it comes to idleing.. and "almost" dying out.. more than likely the power valve has failed in the carb.
I would strongly recomend a carb rebuild.
Also, make sure all the vaccum lines are hooked up correctly and in good shape.
Welcome !!
And . . .

Where are you at? there are probably a few guys in your area that could show you what is going on under the hood. A descent manual will help also...
And get a Photobucket account started for pics....
Welcome....

The "hesitation" sounds like the accelerator pump. Carb rebuild or just replace the pump diaphram.

Thanks for the tips on the idling issue Im having. Where is the accelerator pump diaphram located? This morning it started but soon died. It did this twice and then it wouldnt turn over at all. So I let it sit until later in the afternoon...Started her up midday and it stayed running. Took it in to town and back without issues.
Later this evening I went out to start it and I didnt even have to give it gas! Turned the key and on it came! Not that Im complaining, but I dont understand these symptoms.
Sorry I still havent posted pics, it downpoured most of the day. They will be posted tomorrow weather permitting:D

That looks fairly familiar... :)
Must be nice living in the middle of nowhere where labor rates are $48 per hour. Around here they are $85! That's why I work on it myself.

Hard to start: does it take about 10-20 pumps of the gas to get it started? If so, power valve. For the power valve, you can change it w/o removing or rebuilding the carb.....takes about 15 minutes.

Without removing the carb? How do you get the screws in the power valve cover out? I need to replace a blown power valve and I can't see how to work the four screws out without pulling the carb.

You don't. You have to take the carb loose, at least pull it up off the manifold enough to get a stubby phillips under the power valve cover.

Why did you buy four new tires if a week from now, you're just going to lift it and buy 33's?
