I have the opportunity to grab an 85 windshield and replace my nast 79. Can this be done without any special tools? Any preferred sealers? Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

I have done the same switch. It’s a real bear to do. It takes lots of dishwashing soap, time and patience. We slid the glass in the bottom and worked around the top with modified tooth brushes. (Don’t laugh it worked great) The tooth brushes were sanded like a wedge.

If you're not keeping the old seal, there is a depression under the outer later of rubber that you can find with a screw driver. Make a cut from the edge of the rubber (towards the window)then along that depression for a ways. After you get it started, you should just be able to pull it off by hand all the way around the windshield. Then from the inside using both feet, push with constant pressure until it just pops out. Then you can remove the rest of the seal, and you are ready to put in the new one.

Does the dealer stock new seals? Of not, can you recommend a source? Might as well put one in there...

I had the junkyard take out the good windshield. ($45 bucks for the glass even if I broke it taking it out) The old one was shot so I took it out in pieces.

I bought one from junkyard for 27.00 ripped their dryrotted seal to peices and finished breaking my window apart to save my seal.I then used black rtv silicon to seal it all back together. It turned out great except in heavy rain I get a little water inside.not bad for a truck that had a tree acrossed the cab.You can check a auto glass company on new seals one quoted me 150.00 to install junkyard windsheild I brought with a new seal,no garantees about breakage.

If you can keep a usable seal I would do it. The new seals are a pain to use as well as expensive. I got some very expensive quotes to R&R mine so I did it myself with a good junkyard windshield and my 30 year old seal. I used lots of soap and the modified toothbrush trick. It definitely takes 2 people and I would practice with your old one if you can just so you get the hang of it and dont break the new one while installing it.

New seals cost more than used windshields. If there's any way you can save your old seal, do it.If your old seal is good,it just takes a little time and patience to work the windshield out.You can do it!!

Call a Glass shop, they may surprise you with a price of the NEW Windshield installed. If the seal is good the new windshield is cheaper than having them install a used one. Me and glass are not compatable!!! :(
