My friend has a stock 2wd 2008 Silverado Ext Cab with the 340hp V8 and he wants to strap it up to my 77 Cherokee fresh 360 (hei, performer intake, 650 carb, mild cam) I have the 6.32 granny 1st, dana 20 and 3.07 in the rear end. I also have wider tires then him. I can use my tcase but I can't lock my front end.
What are the chances?

340hp doesn't mean a thing, low end torque and gearing rule. :D
Record it!!! I'd love to see a new Chevy get whomped.
Here's a 4BT Hummer putting the hurt on a Ford F-250 (warning, language) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gh9sMxVVVpw

I voted for the Jeep, but: Traction is going to win this one. Whichever vehicle can apply the most force to the ground is going to be the winner. Will this be on pavement or some form of dirt?

I'd like to know the specs on that HUMVEE. With all the OE parts in it the gearing sucks. It's got like a 35:1 crawl ratio. I was waiting to see the pull strap snap and the HUMVEE to go crashing into the condos behind it.
As to the Jeep, I agree, gearing and traction will win. Whomever has the best of both probably stands the better shot.

Voted Jeep all the way. Definetely record it. That would be owesome to watch. Theirs a local event in my area were people use a steel bar between two vehicles to tie them together and basically play tug-a-war. Its alot of fun to watch. Seen alot and I mean alot of carniage and breakage.

I say jeep but only if you record it and post it up.
I can't wait to see the video.
If I were yo I would do it on dirt so there would be less carnage, maybe.

Traction will win out... Wider tires = WIN
Air those suckers down first... As for doing it on dirt: I agree because it will be cooler looking though there is a greater chance of stalemate (both vehicles dig a hole and neither can pull the other out.... As for carnage: Nah... Its a jeep! Besides a stock drivetrain can take more torque than the engine will produce and since there will be no shock loading I doubt carnage will occure...

I think it's funny when folks hook up their rigs and start pulling. Funny in that they never think about what can break, and what it costs to repair

True but it's fun to watch when it's not yours.

the other thing most people don't think about is where you're hooking to... some guys like to hook to their axle... but if they're hooked to the axle and you're hooked to a receiver mounted anchor then you are being pulled down by his weight as well as your own... increasing your traction... then theres the gearing... you don't want to spin your tires... that means you're loosing your traction... low crawl ratio with low end torque means your at peak torque at low rev's and not franticly burning rubber...
so if you hook up lean into the throttle easily and don't let it break loose... :fsj:

Just hold the brakes until he starts spinning the tires. Then hit the gas and pull him around all day.

I saw an old video on Youtube once where a little ole Wagoneer was hooked up to a big ol Ford F-truck....
Tires started smoking and that little Wagoneer towed him across the parking lot backwards...
Man, I loved that video...:)

I would only do it in a low traction surface (mud, dirt), to keep forces low...

here is how you win. stay on your brakes and let him start spinning his tires, then once they get so hot they will starty to get slippery. that is when you start easing on your gas.
i have seen a little honda pos pull a big lifted f250 in 4wd doing this.

That 401 wag pulled a 460 ford f-250....:D
providing you will hook, the low range of your trans/transfer case will pull it around all day long. As slow as you will crawl, you may not even need to hold the brakes to let him start spinning.
the only problem you will have is that you have a stick shift. unless you ride the clutch, you will be stalling out unless the tires are turning.

It's one of my fraternity brothers at Auburn who has the Chevy. Next time I head down there is when it's on.
It's all about gearing and attention to build quality not brand loyalty. HP helps but not the dominate factor.
PS: don't hook up to an aluminum bumper. :)
