has anyone put on the Edelbrock "total performance package", performer series that consists of the matched cam and manifold?
I'm interested in what the real world gains on it are.
the edelbrock help line was worthless

I have the carb and intake and it made a nice differance over the stock 4v motorcraft (750CFM 4350). The cam would help some more. If your going from a 2v to a 4v you should notice a bigger differance then I did. Throttle responce is great with the intake and carb.

I did the package on a 1984 J-20 several years ago. It raises your peak torque curves to about 1000 rpms over stock. From about 2500 to 3500 rpms. You loose somo on the bottom end (below 200 rpms) so if slow crawling is your thing, you would be running higher rpms to get to your power than you might want too.
On the street, in the sand, and in the mud, it really made a difference you could feel. Basically it turned the J-20 into more of a hot rod than a 4x4.
If I had it to do over again, I would have taken the money for the package, sold the 360, and found a way to put a bigger displacement motor in it.

I meant below 2000rpms.

You might want to look at the Summit 8600 cam also. The price is right and some here claim they like it better than the Edelbrock cam.

FSJeeper: was this with the cam also? I will be replacing my cam next summer and want a good RV cam. Should I not get the performer? I do spend a lot of time around 1000rpm's. Right now my stock cam is worn so much my powerband is 700-3000rpm's for the most part (i dont go over 3000 anyways). If I DO go over 3000 it starts to stumble on itself a bit. When I put the intake on last summer I could see the cam was pretty worn. I have very nice low end torque, I am really pleased with it. But the cam and lifters are getting old (one lifter is starting to tap more)

Yes, it was with the cam and I bought some 1.5" headers to go with it and instead of of the edelbrock/carter carb I ran a holley 600 cause I had one and they are totally easy to dial in.
I found myself in 4 low more often to get to my power and I also seemed to be nailing it more often cause it was there.
If you want more power in the higher rpm ranges, the edelbrock and several others are great. You can use the Chrysler SB crane high intensity lifters to get some of your low end torque back.
That J-20 was great. I totally rebuilt it and the body work and paint were flawless. About 6 months after I got it done it got totaled from behind. I have pics of before and after and it is sad. Ended up parting it out.

Check out Comp Cams 260 or 268??? This is from memory as I dont have which part number on me now but I am running one now with a Edelbrock intake and it gives a good low end with lots more power. Much better than the Edelbrock cam and it gives you that nice lumpy idle that sounds so good through duals.

dharmabum: that loppy idle is what kills all low end power.. I am sure you top end is great...but I do a lot of crawling at or below 1000 rpm's, much as others do here. That loppy idle would cause me to be in my lower gears more then I want to be.

e heard good things about the 260H, but I ned to realisitically say that over 3500rpm is rare for me.
I have a Holly 600 now, and it backfired the other day, now it runs rich, and I'm assuming a wasted power valve. I (now) have a 600 edelbrock with an electric choke on it that's going to take it's place. I figured that as long as I'm in there, I'd love to toss the cast manifold, and as long as I have the manifold off... well you get the picture. either way, I have a 7.4L vortec injection set up in my basement for down the road smile.gif

I have this cam in my 401, great low end!! :D It's all done making power at 4,500 which whould make it a great cam for wheeling. I have the cam sheet if you what a copy. I also have the cam sheet of the Comp 272, this is the cam I going to put in this spring, I like rpms! I want to shift around 5,500, yes I'm crazy but I love seeing the faces of people that think FSJ can't go!!! :D

I find that my cam makes plenty of torque on the low end and still keeps up the power on the highway. I will be honest and say that there isn't any rockcrawling in NJ so I use my engine at higher RPMs than some Southwest guys but I still have plenty of power where I need it. I will have to dig out my spec sheet but I believe the cam puts out most power from 1000-3000 RPM, by no means a high RPM engine and totally usable for most Jeeps with larger tires and moderate gears.
