Any body put in a new plastic flex...whatever in their wagoneer?
Mine seems to be broken in half. I got another but unsure of proper way to remove old one and install new one. Can anyone lead me to correct method?
Thanks

iirc, you hafta un screw the motor so the drive gears can freewheel. ive done it several times. its just that enough time goes by in between so that ive gotta re-learn the process. the whole drive mechanism has to come out

I did the front door and by the time it was all over, I think I concluded if I'd known what I was doing I wouldn't have had to yank the whole assembly. But I had to yank it all to find that out.

The rear is another story. I had to pull the whole thing just to get at it.

Neither are hard to do. Just keep the old one so you will know how short to cut the new one. Yep, that's right. If you got the $12 replacement from the auto parts store, it's a universal that has to be shortened.

is the electric motor under pressure if I take the bolts out? there is a warning in the book... does it apply to the electric windows? after the motor drops can I get the track over the top end? Mine is broken in half and I cannot get the top part out because it hits the top of the door! Duh??

You don't have to remove the assembly at all just take out the bolts holding everything in place then tilt the regulator assembly to the side, and pull the old plastic track off the regulator. You may have to run the motor to get the last part of the track off. Then take the old pieces and the new piece and cut the new one to the same length. You can now start the new track on the top of the regulator and slide it down till it reaches the motor. Then run the motor again and it will pull the new track right down onto the regulator. Be carefull when the last part of the track that bolts to the window starts that it is going straight, if not it will break right off the top of the track.(don't ask me how I know!!) Then you can bolt the regulator back in place and lower the window so it will bolt onto the plastic track.

is the electric motor under pressure if I take the bolts out? there is a warning in the book... does it apply to the electric windows? No the only motor that is under pressure is the one on the tailgate glass. And it will take off a finger in a heartbeat, so be careful if you have to tear into that window.

Good Luck.

FWIW, the plastic flex track rides in a "J" shaped channel that is held onto the regulator/motor unit with two 1/4" hex head screws.

You should be able to remove the "J" shaped channel, thread a new flex track onto it and slide it into place on the motor gears. All without yanking the entire regulator unit.

I had to clean the rust off of my "J" track with some sandpaper before the plastic flex track would slide smoothly. I lubed it with silicone track and cable lube, but I wonder if regular gear grease wouldn't work as well.

Also, watch out that you don't strip the head of the pin that holds the flex track to the bottom of the window. Major PITA if you do.

all good advice! i did not need to remove the motor on my 86 and that was the one and only time i've had to do it.

I used white lithium grease and the window works great (now...for the rest of wag.......).

I finished it last night... had to remove motor bolts, slide down brouht top thru the top hole and added the flex track. It drags a little bit at bottom tho, is there a way to adjust? I thought I put all screws and bolts back the same
Thanks
