I drove by a parking lot where an old N/T Cherk has been parked for a while to see it being towed onto a tow truck. I pulled an immediate U-turn in the my waggy and chased the dude down and asked him what the deal was with it. When I got CLose I could see a heavy duty offroad bumper with winch. A very good condition egg crate grill and front axle with locking hubs. Those are just useful parts I saw off the bat.
I asked the guy the story and he said the store owners wanted it gone and it was going to be put in the lot for 30 days and then crushed if no one claimed it:eek:
I have to be at camp shelby tomorrow so I didnt have much time but I tried to convince the guy to just let me slip him like 200 bucks and just drop it off at my house or something because I know if they take it it is going to the crusher! No dice. I just saw an FSJ make the final death march down the plank...... I am sad:(

I think that the President was aiming his comments toward us when he said "provide a generous credit to consumers who turn in old, less fuel efficient cars and purchase cleaner cars". I only have 4 years till mine becomes smog exempt. I have a complete drive train or two in brand new remanufactured condition. Now is NOT the time to get rid of my cheap car and buy a more expensive one...

Well if I was closer I'd be camping down there 30 days from now to follow it to the crusher and give the crusher guy $400 for it. That's about what it's worth scrap, mabye the dude would take it. Atleast offer to buy the usable parts off it. I hope you guys can rescue it before it goes to FSJ heaven.
And that is yet another odious reason that I'm ANTI-OSAMA!!!!! Wait, I mean Hussein.

Contact the store owner. Since they initiated the tow they maintain responsibility until it is claimed or until they authorize the crushing. At least that's how it works here.
Heck, offer to pay the store owner a hundy for "parking fees" if they will release impound in your name...

Guys-they've had a program like that here in Occupied California for years-if your car fails smog, you can drive it to an authroized wrecking yard and they give you 1K for it on the spot.
Mind you-it has to be in driveable condition, cannot be towed and has to make it to the wrecker under its own power.
I'd contact the tow company, they ALL have auctions, after 30 days it may go up for auction-there is still hope!!!!!!

I'm only an hour and a half from Mobile. Wish I knew where the storage lot was. I'd make a trip down to check on it.
Rider99XX I agree with you, if I know where the storage lot was I would go check it out. I drive through Mobile once a week. ThisGuyUknow is there but I think he is in the reservers and is active right now? up at Camp Shelby maybe?

He could easily say it just wasn't there when he showed up, no problem
no one cares, no ones harmed, no real law is broken
you get what you want, the business gets the vehicle off their property

WELL I didnt want to press the issue. it had a really nice offroad bumper with hidden winch. It was pretty rusty but i am sure there were a lot of parts people could ahve used. Maybe they sent it to a boneyard in the area.

So this cherokee did not die. I found it sitting in a.... well I don't know what it is, its not a junkyard but it is definitely some business that has a bunch of dead lined vehicles. I snuck behind the gate (the business was closed) and took a peak under the hood. The motor looks pretty clean and has an edlbrock intake, and it has a pretty stout front bumper with a really ancient looking winch. Its a N/T cherokee so it may have a 401. I am not sure how to tell the difference between a 401 and a 360 though.. I have been looking on google images but they just look the same to me. If anyone knows for sure how to tell...maybe a vin, stamp on the block???... if its a 401 maybe I can ask the people at the business what the plan for it is... Maybe someone here could salvage the motor??

Should be on the block under the motor mount

Lay under the truck. The cubic inches are stamped on the block right next to the mount.

Actually, they're cast into the block right under the motor mount bracket that bolts to the block. Big numbers, can't miss 'em.

I wish I could but I am moving in two weeks and I still have the head off the 258 in my CJ, Can't figure out why my waggy isn't getting fuel to the carb intermittenlty, have a parts cherokee to part out and then dispose of and have agreed to move a wagoneer body up with me for another member here in exchange for $$ and a set of axles.

If its a 401 I am positive someone here will make the journey to get it once I get all the info. If its a 360 then I wouldnt think it was worth saving.

He's PCS'ing to IL I think...He called me yesterday and I think he's still trying to save this Chero.

Yeah I am moving to Il. I was just going to help whoever wanted to save this get in touch with the owner. I am not sure if its a 401 yet so dont get too excited zorm. If its not a 401 the onlythings worth saving off this rig would be the edlebrock intake and the bumper/winch combo. Its pretty rusted up.
thats cool, PCS'ing, you Air Force or Army, I was Navy 20 years. I ask because I have a guy that wants to buy my 4 door chero and I have been looking for a soild 2 door, or maybe if I find one, I can get him the 2 door and keep mine.
He could easily say it just wasn't there when he showed up, no problem

Actually the driver and his company are liable for the vehicle once it's removed from the lot. In Ohio, when I impound a vehicle, I have to be able to give access to said vehicle any time of the day or night should the owner come to claim it. And until I have a title, either from the owner or filing for it I can't do anything legally with the vehicle. After 60 days I can file for a title, then I can junk or sell it. Simply taking the vehicle and dropping off someplace other than my storage lot is a crime, bigtime. It can cost me my ODOT, and PUCO numbers as well as my freedom if someone wanted to push the issue. So yeah someone gets hurt in the off chance the vehicle wasnt as abandonded as some would assume. Always figure on the owner turning up. I've had total rags sit on my lot for 5 minutes before I get a phone call and gorgeous cars sit for weeks before anyone missed em.. so you never know. As far as this jeep goes contact the owner of the lot/tow company and express interest in the jeep. Most of us are car guys and would rather sell than junk something like that. Not only do we save a "rare" vehicle, we don't have the added time and fuel in a tow to the scrapper. Be realistic though, the tow company has labor, wear and tear on thier equipment and space on thier lot devoted to this jeep.. figure about $500.00 at least.. if scrap is up.. more.. Those things aint light and you can drop all kinds of scrap inside to pad the weight.

Went to the shop. Its a tranny shop. I guess someone bought the car from the tow yard or the owner claimed it. THe tranny shop said they were just waitingfor the owner to come and get it. At least it isnt going to the scrapper yet....
