I found out the other day that I needed a new EGR valve. When I got the new one today, I opened up the package and there is a pack of washers. The instructions say to look at the old EGR valve and get the part # off of it and use their chart on the back of the packaging to choose the correct washer. I looked all over the old EGR valve and can't find the # anywhere. Therefore, I do not know what washer to use. When I took off the old EGR valve, there were no washers in it so should I just use none instead. HELP! I need my rig for work on Monday.

Had the same problem, you need to measure the dimensions of the opening on the old valve. Select the washer that matches that deminsion and install it. The washers determine the amount of exhaust gas that gets recirculated, if I am not mistaken.

Wagdriver,
Thanks for the reply. I think the old EGR valve and the new one both have the same size opening. I will double check though to make sure. I also just got off of the phone with a master mechanic friend of mine and he said the 90% of the cars he works on, don't use any of those washers at all. He also said that if I have good vacuum in the motor, the EGR valve should seal up nicely and not hesitate or have a rough idle. Thanks again.

I just changed mine a couple of weeks ago and it did have the part number on it. I matched it to the list that came with the new one and it showed that no washer was needed.

Now that I think about it I don't remember using a washer in mine either. Apparently the EGR valve is used on several models of various GM products and it is for those that the washers are included. Good luck! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

I tried installing the EGR valve with no washer and the motor would not run. It sounded like it had a big cam. I was told that this means that there is to much air getting into the EGR valve. So I had to take the EGR valve off and put a washer in it, put it all back together and then try it again. I did this about 5!!! different times before I got to a small enough washer that the motor would run barely. I didn't have any smaller washers so I blocked off the EGR valve and the hose going to it and now the motor runs perfect. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif I also replaced the plugs with new Champion truck plugs and WOW! let me tell you, the motor has a significant amount of more power. Thanks for the help guys.

From what you have said if suspect that you have vacuum applied at the wrong time. The vacuum signal is not applied to the egr valve until the engine is well off idle, that is probabley why it would not idle or run at low RPMs.

I personally think that no washers are needed. My old one didn't have one, so why should I put any in the new one? Just for refrence, what kind of EGR valve are you guys running? Part # as well.

Pat,
I found the receipt for mine. All it says is:
GPA 779-2321, EGR Valve W/Gasket. It's for a 1988 GW.
