First off the current setup is...

89 GW stock 360 2bbl, stock 727, stock 229
stock d44 front and rear, open diffs, 2.72 gears
4" lift with 34x9.50 swampers

This is a purpose vehicle at this time. Mild off road use because it is made to tow a 19' camper to the playground, and home again. My choice for gears are 4.89's, rear locker choice is a Detroit, front locker choice is an OX.

Fuel mileage is not a concern, this vehicle gets driven about 3000 miles a year. 3rd addition to my fleet. May change to 33's up to 35's in the future. Any opinions will be greatly noted, I have some time to decide on the best setup.

Thanks..

4.89 gears are kind of steep for D44 axles. I wouldn't go much higher than 4.56. You would probably be good with 4.27 gears front and back with a set of OX lockers.

4.27's were my second choice. I beleive the pinion gear had 2 more teeth than the 4.89's did. It would make it stronger for the towing duty. The only thing I don't like about 4.27's are the overall gearing drops to 3.64 with the 34" tires. 4.89's overall with 34's is 4.17.

Unless you like the listen to a high revving V8 while cruisin, or never go above 55mph, the 4.89 are too high IMO. I have 4.56's, 35's, and overdrive, and wish I had stuck to 4.10's...

Thanks for the gearing opinions so far. I do have some questions about the Detroit locker.

Is anyone using a detroit in the front, or rear, and driving the vehicle on the street? I have only used limited slip diffs in the past for the easy street feel. The off road use on limited slip is key word "slip". The one I used in my previous rig had this problem.

Thanks...
