View Full Version : Comanche vs. J-Truck

I had a Comanche; drove it everyday for 10 years. It was an outstanding truck. Except for the cab, which was designed for Hobbits. ( I'm 6'2" )
I would love to have a J-Truck, but I'm wondering how they compare for cab comfort and legroom? Has anyone owned and driven both?
Not in any manner of time, but yes.
In the early 90's we had a shop truck that was an MJ - I like you am also 6'2 and did not enjoy the MJ for leg room, now in 2008 I bought an SJ and have no issues with the bench seat.
So a 10 year difference from one to the other, but I still remember the shop truck. More room in the SJ (FSJ)
My .02
Hope it helps.

I'm 5'8, 114 lbs. and am not overly comfortable in the cab of the Honcho. I've got the seat against the back of the cab and there just isn't much leg room.

I have and I think they are pretty much the same. I'm 5'9 and my J10 seems to give less legroom to stretch out the legs. When not using the clutch my left leg is behind the clutch as far as I can go! LOL! Not sure if that's a good thing or not!

but a J-truck has plenty of headroom.

I'm 5-11 and while it's not unconfortable, I could use a couple more inches of legroom in my J300.

hmm...i'm 5'7" and considerably rounder :D, and i have plenty of room in the J20. maybe it's the seats.

You know how girls are with those long legs. :)
Yeah, the bench in my Comanche could have been used at Abu Ghraib to torture terrorists.
Where did I put my cab stretcher? Well it sounds like I should be looking for a Cherokee or Waggonoozer so as to have somewhere to go with it when relocating the seat.

I'm 5-10 and while I loved driving my Commanche it was a tight fit. Width may be comparable to a J but the leg and head room is definately tighter. Not a good truck for 3 people to ride in.

I recently swapped out the bench seat for factory buckets in my '79 J10. The buckets are way more comfortable but definitely offer less leg room.
The bench seat would move back into the recess in the back cab wall...which allowed it to move farther back. The backs on the buckets are just a little higher and prohibit them moving back into the recess. The pictures in my '79 brochure confirm that they came this way from the factory.
From what I can tell the bench seat would go back about 4" farther. The bench seat actually had more leg room than I needed though if it was all the way back....I usually had it pulled a little forward.
I'm 6' 2" and I'd like the seat to be a little farther back than I can get the bucket to go but It's a minor issue. The improvement in the comfort and style in the truck outweighs the little loss in leg room ten fold.

You're 6,2 and you find the leg room with a bench comfortable? That's hopeful. I love J-Trucks, nothing else on the road has the attitudenal gravitas of a J-Truck. Now I need to find one I can try on.
That's a nice looking blue truck you have there. I blow through Marshall on occasion. If you're on the road with it one day and some nutball in an Impala or raggedy Ranger blows his horn at you, it could be me.

Yeah the bench seat gives you a bit more room but the buckets are still reasonable for my height. I spend a lot of time driving a CJ5 though which isn't the best vehicle for tall folks so maybe I've just become accustomed to it:D
The bench seats in the J-Trucks arent the greatest in general though as far as comfort goes.
I'll keep an eye out for you.
Here is a nice J10 a member here is selling just a couple of hours away down in Richmond...and it's got a bench seat:thumbsup: :

I'm 6'6" and both vehicles you mentioned are miserable:eek: . Get a GW or Cherokee and be done with it:) . I had a car I liked so much I took the padding out of the seat so I could have more room. I did have more room, but surprisingly:rolleyes: a lot less comfortable.

I had an 82 j10 laredo with factory bucket seats(sold back in jan:( ), and i had plenty of room, and im 6'1", and while i had my j10 i also had my comanche(which i still have) and their is a lot more leg room and head room in the j10 then the comanche, and thats without headliners on both of them,
I like my comanche because its smaller and i can go through trails alot easier than i could in the j10, besides that i loved my j10 becasue it was a beast on and off road and there is nothing like a good ol roaring v8, im looking into buying one again after i sell my GW, maybe even sooner if i cant get some money in

I've never really driven an MJ but I had a 2 dr XJ and the J10 has more room by far. I'm 5'6" and the J10 has gobs more room and I sit so much higher up.

It's funny, I have the exact opposite experience. I had a XJ for three years and for some reason, I never felt too tight, which has happened in my J300 (bench seat ALL the way back). Then again, I'm five inches taller.

My dad has a MJ and it was not fun to drive at 6' even. I had a J10 (with the brow) and it wasn't all that comfortable but more so than the MJ. I think it has more to do with how long your legs are. The Waggy is far more comfortable from what I remember from the last time I drove it 2 years ago. I just wish the seats reclined.

Im 5 11 and I have a j10 and my dad has a comanche, and to me the cab seems bigger in the j10. since the trans tunnel is shorter and the cab is wider but there is definately more room in the j10, and besides that the j10 is more fun to drive if only i had a 5 speed:drivin:
Id measure both of them if only i new where one of our many tape measures was:banghead:

Yeah, legroom is the single most important reason that I own an M715 instead of an M37.
I'm comfortable in the Honcho, but I need to find a Tilt column. The legroom is just barely enough, but the wheel is way too close for me to comfortably make that mad stab at the brakes. Bang my knee on the wheel every time.

I'm about six foot and I've never had ANY problems with leg room in my J10, I've always found the interior on the roomier side of any vehicle I've ridden in.
Of couse then again I do DD a '96 Geo Metro and that may have something to do with it, I feel like a **** clown getting into that thing.

My Dad was 6'2" and he drove a Mini for many years. In fact, that was the family vehicle, for my parents and their two kids. Crumple zones... Pffftt!!
