I haven't located a manual yet. Ok so here's the story. I'm trying to get my Jeep ready for next weekend and have hit a snag. The crank pulley was loose so I pulled it off for a look and have found that the key is chewed up. I want to get the key out and replace it but it appears that the distributor gear needs to come off too. Ultimately the question is will the gear slide out through the front cover if I pull the seal out first? Also, does anyone know if the crank and waterpump pulleys are available new? Thanks a million!

The key also goes into the timing chain gear (or so it appears in the manuals I have) so the cover must come off. This would be a good time to check the timing chain wear, the chain should be no less than 3.380" apart at the narrowest gap. There is a special tool that is used to take tension off the cam that consists of a bracket that bolts to the top of the cam bearing caps and has an adjustable hook that hooks into the cam sprocket.

Here's a little update for those who are interested. Today I called around and found a water pump pulley but no luck on the crank pulley. It seems they've been obsolete since Nixon was in office. I pulled the front cover off and the key that holds the pulley is also holding the distributor drive but not the timing chain gear. From what I can discern the gear will come out of the front cover if the seal were removed. My cover gasket was leaking and as Jeepbob suggested it would be good to check the chain while I'm there. Kaiser/Willys was 30 years ahead when they designed this engine. The cam drive looks identical to the newer OHC engines I've seen but I digress.

Celeriac - you got a nice collection of classic rigs! I've always wanted to mess with a Tornado engine. Yes, Jeep was way ahead of its time with that one. That and the orginial OPTIONAL IFS. To bad they did not stick with it and make it right. I guess that was that last unique Jeep engine?

Update part two. Today I learned that you cannot get a waterpump gasket for this engine either. Time for the blue goo!

You oughta cut out a gasket out of a sheet of rubber or atleast fiberboard before you just use the goo.

Actually you can if you buy the water pump too. Buy some gasket paper and make one it you do not want to buy a water pump. Mine was $27 with a $30 core at Car Quest.
