Whatever just make sure you have a shifting schematic on the dash. Nice overdrive. Did this come out of a fire company or other county vehicle?

I think the big lever next to the tranny is for OD

the 2 little ones are for PTO probably one for on-off and one for either high-low or fwd-rev

the transfer case levers one is 4wd-2wd the other is high-low

Yep.

It's a Jeep T-98 behind a F134. Twin-stick Dana 18 transfer case. All that is factory Jeep. The overdrive is a 2-speed planetary transmission that bolts to the back of the transfer case - very similar in function to the low range unit on a Quadratrac. The rest is PTO - don't know as much about that ... Herm the Overdrive Guy is the expert on these. I know that you can still get the parts to run the PTO and the Warn overdrive together, as in this case, from him.

It's basically Jeep's version of a theft deterrant - think of the poor thief hopping in and being faced with all those levers!

I think all the levers have been identified in previous replys, but I'll break 'em down:

Big stick is the trans - 4 spds. + reverse.
The one next to it shifts the overdrive in and out - so multiply that by the 4 speeds of the trans and you've now got 8 forward and 2 reverse.
The next two are the Dana 18 transfer case (all were twin-sticked from the factory) one is hi-low range and the other is front axle drive in and out. So combine the two ranges in the t-case with the 4 spd trans and the over drive and now you've got 16 spds forward and 4 reverse. If the detent in the front drive was removed, you'd have double those numbers in different drive modes, as each speed could be in 4WD or 2WD. The mind boggles!

The two levers at the rear are to engage the front and rear outputs of the PTO.

Just FYI - not all D18s were twin sticked. I'm not sure that the F134 D18s were twin-sticked to the end in 1971... maybe, though I think I've heard otherwise. The 225 V6 CJs have a single-stick D18; 2H-4H-N-4L, front to back. Just in case you get to drive one :drivin:

I have seen many pictures of the overdrive unit for the D18's, but that is the first time I have seen or herd of a PTO that bolts onto the overdrive unit. It is pretty interesting.

I like Frank's 'Theft deterrant version' better. :D

...one is hi-low range...

hi-neutral-low. Set the parking brake and put that lever in neutral and if someone can actually figure out how to get it started it's fun watching them shift through the gears and go nowhere! :D And equally frustrating when you are working on something else and accidentally hit the lever, shifting it into neutral, and not realize it - and then wonder why it's not moving and can't imagine what you've screwed up...
