The valve is frozen probably. You may be able to take it off and clean it then try applying vaccuum to it to see if it works.Would be worth a try.

I just had my jeep smogged, it was a gross polluter. When they checked it out the EGR valve and passages were plugged. Check it for being plugged before you buy a new one. I clean mine in carb cleaner.

Yeah, I would try cleaning it also. Seems like it worked for me...

Did each place give you a part number for the EGR they were selling to you? There is a chevy EGR, part number wells EGR123 that is supposedly listed as a replacement part for the 360 engine and works properly. In a parts book there are about twenty different part numbers for 360 egr's. I have no idea why, but suspect that AMC used just about any egr valve that was available. I don't think there is a great deal of difference between any of them. You may have been quoted apples and oranges rather than for the same part.

will a clogged EGR make an engine run rough? if so, why?

When I got my anti-knock kit from the Chysler dealer it had a rochestor EGR. I was not able to cross reference it with a GM part number but i would think there would be a way to do that. I tried to contact rochestor but they were no help. I could get the # on the EGR if anyone wants it.

A simple EGR test is:

While the engine is warm and running, push on the underside of the EGR and see if it moves and drops your RPMs. It should do both! Mine does take a little bit of pushing force.

I have referred people to TPIGUY's site many times when it comes to emissions systems. He has done a great job of explaining the function of every component on our jeeps including how the EGR system functions and the effect that each component of the system has on the way the engine operates. The article that he wrote deals specifically with the way to reconnect the emission components after a TBI conversion, but the information is useful even if you have not converted. The site is http://www.customefis.com/emissions.html
