View Full Version : How much for a decent paint job?

I have a line on a Cherokee with a good rust free body that is in dire need of paint.

The paint on it is there but it is very faded red.

Excluding the body work, how much do ya think a good quality paint job would be for a non-metalic color? I would either go with Red again or possibly copper (which means painting the inside too).

I would pull the bumper, roof rack, etc. Let them tape the windows.

General thoughts on how much?

Red colors of paint tend to cost more. If you want it done correctly, you are probably looking at $3000 or more, including any minor body work.
If you want it done cheaply, you can get it done for about $500.00. Of course, the rubber window gaskets, as well as half the chrome will be covered in paint at no additional charge.

Jeff's right for the most part IMHO...depends on what you want.

I got my J10 painted earlier this year. It's not gonna be a show truck I just wanted it to look decent. I removed all the trim/etc and took care of a good bit of the prep work (a day's worth of work) and had the MAACO shoot it here in Springfield. They did a very good job for the price. They did NOT overshoot anywhere that I've found, and I've looked. I've found 3 spots that need touching up, and will be taking it back for them to do that (4 year guarantee on the paint job) and it cost me 600 bucks for autumn crimson metallic. Now it ain't a show job, but it's sure good enough for me.

I would say - at least $2000 for a "decent" paint job.

I would pull the rear windows out.. very easy to do and it will paint a lot better. Remove as much trim as you can so the paint is under the edges when you re-install it.

Show paint could easily run 10 grand .. and up !

I've heard that rumor as well...

I painted my J10 for less than $100 including paint, tape and supplies... slightly more for the SuperChief and Choptop.

I am very impressed with the job dlowrence got for the money!

Send me a pic. I've brought the deadest of paints back from the dead. I'm to far away to detail, but at least I can let you if the color is truly shot.

LOL. Well, it needs some body work that will make is necessary to paint either way.

I am encouraged by the $600 Maaco job... I am willing to go higher. But here in AZ we go wheel'n and that means pin stripes. Lots of money on paint just doesn't make sense but I want it to look 'good' for general driving around....

Is the paint origional?

If it's a 2 Door widetrac Cherk...from AZ...and U ever plan on selling and making profit...then don't paint it.
They're fixin to skyrocket in price as soon as Moab magazine coverage hits.

A "quality paint job" is very subjective...old saying U get what U pay for...is especially true on paint.

A cheap paint job really lowers the value of a vehicle as it makes painting one to high quality standards that much harder and thus more expensive.

Also repainted vehicles makes buyers think... hiding something.

If it's already been repainted or U wanna wheel it hard then disregard above.

Spend a weekend sanding and taping. Spray it with a gallon of enamel implement (tractor) paint from the hardware store using the compressor you own and a borrowed gun.

Here is a pic..

http://www.fullsizejeeps.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10049/normal_82_Cherokee_006.jpg

This was before the current owner went wheel'n in it and rubbed the front of the back fender on a rock and separated it a little from the body. A small bit of damage to the rocker too.

It's in good shape overall. No rust. I think it has been painted before. THere is a chip of paint out on the top and it is white underneath. But the doors, interior, engine compartment are all red.

I am not worried about resale value. I never sell. If I pick it up (and I am leaning towards that) the only thing that keeps me from dropping a few grand on the paint job is that I will, in fact, take it out wheel'n and it will get some AZ pinstripes.

BALLPARK > JUST SAY 3.0 PER PANEL = 27.0 LESS OVERLAP TIME 4.5.
TOTAL > 22.5 X $60.00 = $1350.00 + MATERIAL!
OK! $1350.00 LABOR,THAT'S NO BODYWORK, NO JAMS! :p :D

I'd like to know this as well. I think I spent over $100 in reducer.

I think I spent over $700 in supplies alone, took over 2 weeks in labor for body work, and a full week to paint. I didn't have much damage but enough hidden rust that didn't remain hidden once I got into it. After the initial body work, I primed it, sanded, primed, sanded, then shot sealer. Finally I went on to 1 1/2 gallons of red and two gallons of clear. (I did the inside as well.)

Now this is the first time that I did a whole vehicle and I made some mistakes along the way and maybe did more than a professional shop would do, but the cost of materials was way more than I thought it would be.

I just got a quote for mine $2800. No rust repair needed, about 5 different dents to bang out.
Paint dude said if I remove all the trim, bumbers, bang out all the dents and sand it, he will shoot it with a good sealer & single stage urethane for about $1400. Base / clear was more.
This was the cheapest quote I got, I checked 3 quality paint guys.

I'd like to know this as well. I think I spent over $100 in reducer.

I sprayed it with a gallon of custom mixed tractor paint... it was about $35 for the paint.

I'm not suggesting Elliot wants to do the same, as was said earlier, "decent" has different definitions to different owners and these Jeeps have different uses.

Big Orange lived in the mud and got power-washed after... $100 paint job was perfect.

SuperChief will be a daily driver and will see some trails and Colorado passes, but no way I'm going to put that paint anywhere near a tree or rock to damage it.

The ChopTop will get professional paint because it's the ChopTop, but any other trail rig would get the tractor paint treatment again.

LOL... no. :grumble:

I was just saying that you can do a super cheap spray and have it look good enough for offroad... even cheaper if you are willing to roll it.

If you want a decent job, it will cost.

On mine, GoMango color, I am in supplies alone about 2k. That is a basecoat / clearcoat paint job.

If you were to stick with single stage paint, it would be much cheaper.

I would expect to pay 2-3k for most decent paint jobs. 4-8k for a NICE paint job.

Hmmm I went on the real cheap.....I did all of the sanding myself, had the shop do the body work and had about $2k in the project. I could have done it for less had I not needed as much sanding (had to hire some day help) and not as much bodywork.

the paint on my avitar cost $1,600. that was cost of materials, minor prep, Tan Base coat, Beige Paint, inset Turquoise paint, inset Copper surround, and clear coat. The guy originally quoted me 1,500 for just the Minor prep and Paint job. I supplied the paint materials. But he kept putting it off for insurance claim jobs (more money). So when it was finally done 4 months later he knocked 600.00 off the price. I took it back a month later and he painted the door jams for free. The only real problem I had was at the paint supply store could not find good paint match for the original color. The new color is a little lighter with a very slight green tint. But it works for me.

My son painted an S10 he had (with a 383 stroker . . just had to add that) with tractor paint. Black and orange. He had that truck a couple years. We have no garage at our home so it was outside for 2 years. (He did keep it clean) and it looked as good the day he sold it as it did when he painted it.

Tractor paint will be going on my Scrambler this fall.

you don't wanna know what a quality paint job goes for in europe.... a bit of cutting, a bit of welding, a bit of straightening, a bit of priming, a bit of sanding, and some paint... i can only say that it's over 10k for top of the top... this goes for a jeep, a bmw or a ferrari... labour is just so dxmn expensive overseas... you guys are very lucky over there...

and that's only for the body...
if you wanna sandblast a frame, galvanize it and then epoxy coat it, you would need some extra pennies...

but...

" a thing of beauty... is a joy forever..."

I got a couple of estimates. $1900 (local guy) and $2500 (macco, after a $500 'we need the business' discount). There is a considerable amount of body work to fix the rear fender flairs. The local guy said he would basically sand the entire body, macco said they would spot sand it. I would do the work myself but I don't have time. Once the truck is painted I have other work I have to do and I am racing against 100 degree days showing up soon... The local guy was cheaper on the prep, maaco was cheaper on the paint.

This is for single stage. No clear coat. I am going to wheel this thing and in arizona that means 'pin stripes' in no time so a 'decent' paint job will have to be good enough.

$2500.00 for a Maaco paint job? Wow there goes that idea for this summer. Looks like I might be spraying her in the garage or at my parents place under a make shift canopy.

There is almost $1000 in body work. But there are other fees.

$175 more because it is a truck
$250 to do 'two tone' paint (I want to black out around the side windows like the Cheifs do)
It was their best single stage paint.
and maybe some other 'extras'. I will go grab the quote.

Has anyone had a final GW ('86-'91) painted with the wood paneling still attached and let the shop mask and work around it? Any pictures to share? How'd it turn out?

Lastly, any reason one couldn't sand the stock woodgrain panels down and shoot them some color of choice? Or would that look pretty bad with the worn trim surround? Curious what else is out there aside from BJ's awesome woodgrain kit.
