The donor truck is a 1994 Grumman 24' van from the very rusty city of Chicago. I paid $1800.00 for it and it only has 123K on the whole truck. Before I bought it though I confirmed this through the company records and I was able to speak to the fleet tech directly. As it turns out the truck ran excellent and I even drove it 150 miles after I got it home. The best thing about the truck is it's a intercooled version and came with hydraboost. I plan to mate it to the a NV4500

I have a built D60 Chevy for the front and a D70 for the rear. Both have ARB's and 4.88 but I will be running 39's so I hope it will not be too deep of a gear. I plan to take the Premire Welder off of my CJ and the A/C converted air compressor, if I'm able to make it fit. Should be a tough vehicle so I can explore and not have to worry about breaking, elevation, MPG, or power when pulling the off road trailer I built to match.
Here's the van that I bought in Chicago.

The motor I have in this truck is going into 1973 Jeep grand Wagoneer that I blew the motor on two years ago plowing snow. The wife wants me to sell it once I've installed the motor in it. I said, "Sure I will......", but inside I was thinking, "Not a chance" :D

This is the turbo I'm using, it's from a 98' Dodge 6BT. I'm also test fitting the manifold that I had cut and welded here locally, thanks CrewCab for the great idea!!! The guy killed about 6 rods welding it due to the cracks, thats what I get for a free manifold. Once I test fit it and get it running well I'll probibly use one from Mooktank. The manifold is also from the 98' 6BT

The transmission is going to be a NV4500 that came out of a 1996 Dodge truck. I also plan to run a NP205 Transfer Case. I'll have to machine the back of the transmission a little to enlarge and seal on the power-shaft that joins the input of the T/C and the output of the transmission.

These are the axles I'm using. Front is a Dana 60 that came out from under a Chevy one ton dually. I converted the hubs to single wheel and shorted the axle 4 inches to match the rear's 65" width. The rear Dana 70 is out of a 78 Ford tow truck that was a dually. I plan to change the brakes to disc. They're coming out of my CJ7 that I built some years ago. They both already have ARB's and 4.88 R&P, so I'm hopeful that it's not to deep of a gear because I plan to run 39" tires for deep snow, rocks, and sand. They're on a 12" wide rim that I have DIY beadlocks for.

Thanks for bringing this info over here I didn't like going over to the other site to find it.:D

Also can you tell me what all the 4bt came in? I know that they are in chip trucks, but are they in any other self-propelled thing? I have found them in compressors & Gen sets but I don't know if they would work?

Thanks & keep the updates coming

There is a dark side in my future.:D :D

Pumps, Gen sets, compressor engines should work, you would just have to get the injection pump set up for automotive use.

I'm bringng this over from the www.4btswaps.com (http://www.4btswaps.com) page that I belong to.
I am a member there also.
I would also ask that you make some postings over at the http://messages.jeep2diesel.org/ forum also.
It was down for a while and is now back.
The activity is slow, but is building as folks know the site is back and folks start to participate.

Gen sets and Compressor engines have different govenors as well they typically dont have an AFC air fuel controll system for low boost fueling under load. this system is what compensates with additional fueling to keep the motor running when you let the clutch pout and increase the load against the engine off idle

These are the motor mounts. I plan to cut them down 3.5" inches and weld them onto the frame of the GW. The best thing about using the factory motor mounts they're made of 1/2 plate steel. With the crossmember that comes with it, should make a strong mount for the motor.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/4BTmotormounts2.jpg

The mounts are liquid filled to reduce vibration.

I've been thinking about something, let me know if you all think it's a good idea. I have the 88 GW that I been working on a litlle at a time but I just found a dump bed for an older 1-ton truck that's in great shape. I was thinking of putting the 4BT in the 73 J-4000 and installing the dump on it.....

I found a Flat bed off of a Ford F150. It's 8-foot long 7-foot wide. I plan to go dually on this truck so the width is not a concern for me. The main reason for this swap is rust, a very large hole that was cut in the bed floor by the previous owner, dually axles, and I use the truck every day for plowing. I would like to make the flat bed dump so I could use it that way as well.

EDIT: I changed the name of this thread to explain what the goal of the the project is.

Here's a few pix's of stage one, the flat bed swap....

With the narrower frame rails that was set for, if you leave that c-channel on there and just weld new ones on at your frame width... don't forget to notch the inner set for the fitting over the crossmember above the axle. It's a lot easier to do that before you mount the bed. ;) I did it the hard way. If you are going to raise the bed higher than the 4" channel would place it then you may be able to avoid the notching altogether.

Man I had a very hard day on Friday. So I get up early to pull the bed off and what do you know it starts snowing, alot!!!

I'm using one of the tow trucks to pull the bed off and man was it cold. I was soaked head to toe. So I get the bed off, put the truck away, and walk inside to warm up.........I get called out by the tow company for alot of dumb people driving way to fast for ice covered roadway.

Anyway after a long cold day and night of towing I'm able to set the flat bed on, strap it down, and drive home. So here's some pic's of the first fit.....................

After jacking the rear up to about where I want it to ride. Since I plan to lift the truck I want the flat bed as low to make it easier to use.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/IMAGE_092-1.jpg

I'm going to have to build it up here as well as install a pivot for the bed to dump.

It's awesome now, but it was so pretty before!

Well pictures can be deceiving. The bed had alot of rust. As well as a very large square hole in the floor. I found out later just how much bondo it had in the panels when I dropped the bed on the ground and a large chunk cracked and fell off. I thought of just repairing it or swapping another bed on it but I use it mainly as a work truck so a flat bed, with a little lift crane, and the ability to dump is more of a necessity. But thanks for the

I've heard that as well. If that becomes as big a deal as I think it may be I will just have to mount the plow under the Cherokee since it'll have the narrowed open knuckle Dana 60 under it.

If for some reason you get hard up for an axle I have a E350 D70 U here with a blown pinion bearing I'd sell cheap but then getting it to you would likely be Forward Air unless you know someone out this way. IIRC, and it's been awhile now... the ring gear was undamaged.

Well, Jeep actually built them low on purpose. After you try and swing a few Dana 60's or 14 bolts up onto that bed you will soon see why. I'm thinking my dually is going to be a lot higher than I wanted... at least for a parts hauler, as a winch truck I think it will be fine.

Yes, alot. But you have to understand I had a 8.5 foot plow hanging off the front end with too sets of helper springs to keep the front up. I'll snap a picture of the set I removed from it, you'll laugh!!;) :D

The Jtruck looks great:thumbsup:!

I'm so confused on the Hell Creek springs and what kind of hight gains are actually accomplished with them:banghead:. Between members on here that have posted pics and JP Mag, I can't tell if I run a set of front 4" springs on my J2000 if they will dwarf my 7.50-16s and sit way nose up with my flipped shackle or not. I'm looking for a stance very similar to what Thom has (KaiserMan). Any advice?

P.S. sorry for the kinda highjack.

No worries on the hyjack. 7.50 16's are a 31-32 inch tire. You have to remember that when any spring manufacture states the spring they offer is a "4-inch lift" they mean from "stock". Most any vehicle doesn't ride at stock height so even a no lift replacement spring will give you lift. I think 7.50x16 are a great size with the Hellcreek 4-inch and no body lift. It was always my intention to install 36's OE Buckshots, or 9.50x16 Grip Spur's. Both are tall and skinny which will work great on a dually setup. Go with the 4-inch, you won't be disappointed.

Where's the beef????? Here's the beef!!!!!!!!

In the form of 69 Dodge W300 front and rear DANA 70'S!!!

[picture removed]

The pictures don't do this axle justice, so I put a 1/2 Ford 9-inch in the picture.

[picture removed]

Then the axle tubes are monsterous!!! That's my size 10 work boot on it for conparison.

Just look at the gussets on this rear, Yeah baby!!!!

Here is some disc brakes for those front Dana 70 axles.
I had this bookmarked when I was looking at a set of Dana 70 axles from a W300 Dodge Ambulance.

Lots of folks here and on the Great Lakes 4X4 forum poo-pooed the idea of using monster axles like these.
I was told all kinds of silliness, like these era Dana 70 are weaker than a Dana 44.
I say you got them...run them!

I agree a little with them only of the fact the metal used in the axle shafts back in the day is not as strong as current ones. Although I do remember a M715 with 44" Boggers that did very well in the Top Truck Challange about 10-years ago.

Pulled the D70 front out of the weeds the other day to start the measuring and mock-up phase of this build. I'm having a custom high steer arm made since the D70 trunnion bearing cap is much bigger than the commonly made Dana 60 arms. The great thing about these D70 is the tie rod is behind the axle so i won't hit rocks with it. Here's just a few picture I snapped.........

This axle it 4-inches wider than the Dana 44HD that I have under there.....
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/Wherethebeef.jpg

If you can see the Dana 44 in the background it'll give you a idea how much bigger this axle is. I wanted to wait to install it because I wanted to lift it first. I just noticed something I didn't count on....because of the axle houing tube size, I'm going to get an additional 1 inch of lift!! :D

Since I'm going to leave the trucks springs in the OE spot I'll have to make one new U-bolt plate and weld up some spring pads. The one on the passengers side is going to be the trick with half of it on the housing.

Ok, I have the axle now. After measuring it correctly it only has a 56" space between the backing plates. I think I'm going to have to still put the spings under the frame. Mainly to make room for the snow chains.

Also he brought the new dually rims. After a little elbow grease and polish here's one of them. I'm still going to have to use steel wool to get all the rust spots off, but al least the chrome is in good shape!!

Dang nice rims! Your right on the backing plates, if you have your spring plates up top they would hit/be too close to the backing plates when installed. OK OK where do I start.........

I left you guys/gals when I had just cut the rear end out of my truck. After some thinking, ALOT of thinking, I made the choice to use the springs and hangers off of the back of a 79 Dodge 3/4 ton that was abandoned here in town which I had to drag to the yard while working for the tow company. The truck was missing the bed so I begin looking and measuring the springs during a slow day at the tow house. The length, height, and way the springs mounted to the frame appeared to be very similar to my J4800 springs. So out came the blow torch and away went the rivets. Then I went to work on the rivets and spring pins on the frame of my J-truck. I for one can attest to how well those things are attached!!! After killing my Craftsman drill while drilling out 16-3/8 and then enlarging all 16 to 1/2 holes, they mounted up like they were made for it.
Here's a few pictures......
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/mytruck3.jpg

Since I have Hell Creek springs on the front they raise the back with the stock "rake" to allow me to install overloads that will only contact and increase spring rate once a load is in the bed. The main reason I changed over to the Dodge springs is parts availability and the rear Hell Creeks that I bought from another member here were too short. I also couldn't find a bushing for the J4800 springs, the big pins were very worn from a prior bad bushing, and the fact that one or more of the leafs were broken. But all and all I like the way it turned out. Funny thing is one of the Jeep factory rivet holes on the front mounts worked out perfectly for the new mounts and I used them as a gauge to measure from. I mounted the Dodge spring hangers to the Jeep frame using 1/2 grade 8 bolts. The best part about this conversion is the dodge hangers put the rear springs the same distance from the frame as the Jeep ones. I could've used the stock axle and u-bolts but I wanted a much stronger one. I mounted the Dually Dana 70 HD with 4:10's in the back and I had to custom machine the spring plates to fit both the larger U-bolts and much larger rear end tube circumference.

After that was done a guy stopped buy the house and offered me "the right" price for the flat bed that I just bought for the J-truck. So I needed to change a few things about this build. I needed some weight on the rear axle and I carry alot of tools, chains, welding bottles, etc..etc..etc, I remembered this picture a couple of months ago......So I went on a mission........ http://i26.tinypic.com/w71w7p.jpg

I found a guy here in the valley that was selling this one for a very good price......
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/Boxbed2.jpg

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/Boxbed.jpg

I dragged it home and used the tow truck to load it on the back of the truck, man that thing was heavy.

And here it is up to this point........

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/mytruck2-1.jpg

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/mytruck-1.jpg

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/mytruck5.jpg

As one can see I will have to clearance the rear box 3X5X5 to make room for the rear spring movement. Also the reason for the box being so high is due to the fact that the truck has a 3-inch body lift on it. I'm going to have to build a superstructure in the front and rear to mount the box solid.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/mytruck4.jpg

At this point I still need to clearance the rear box to allow me to move it forward, build the front superstructure to hard mount the box, mount the lift gate that I bought from another member here....

I've had several contractors stop to check it out and ask if it's for sale!! When I mount the 4BT in it they'll really want then!!!

I do remodeling and mobile mechanicing, The utility bed I have is a plumber box, very short and shallow. I can not even put a worm drive saw into the box. I'm hoping to find a larger box like yours.

Thanks for the pics, I have a better idea what it'll look like.

Nice work, Jason...

There's nothing wrong with D70 front axles. They might be thinking of the weak D60's that are in the M715. But then alot of people think if its not an open knucle axle its weak.

Tom

Here is some disc brakes for those front Dana 70 axles.
I had this bookmarked when I was looking at a set of Dana 70 axles from a W300 Dodge Ambulance.
http://www.uglytruckling.com/Sweptline%20W%20Series%20Trucks/Sweptline%20W300%20Front%20Brake%20Manual1.htm

Lots of folks here and on the Great Lakes 4X4 forum poo-pooed the idea of using monster axles like these.
I was told all kinds of silliness, like these era Dana 70 are weaker than a Dana 44.
I say you got them...run them!
Let the naysayers know how well they work! HAHAHAHA!!

Ohh I know how strong a D70 front is, we have one on the two the old Dodge brush trucks we have here have that same axle under both of them. A lot of weight on these old trucks. I plan to use the axle as is for now though depending on how it brakes I may have to change it over to disc in the front.

If those are the Huge knuckle Dana 70 that came on the service Dodge trucks like the one that fire deptments bought, you hit a home run!!

I think it's the same axle that you are putting in your truck. They have 4.88 gears and the rear has a power-loc. I'm going to swap the power-loc to the front and put a locker in the rear.I'm also going to use the outer knucles and steering arms off my M715. That will give me high steering arms.

So an update......

As we FSJers are, I found a new direction with this project, mostly with the bed....... As I said before I loved the way this one looked....
http://i26.tinypic.com/w71w7p.jpg
....but I also loved the look and function of this one.....
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/Emotions/CJ2K%20links/IFSJA%20ORG/NYDuallyDump1.jpg

So as it was a local tractor shop needed to build a service truck. They offered to buy the service bed I had. Before I agreed I started looking for another one that would fit a dually.
During a search on-line I came across this.....
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/100_2621.jpg
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/100_2620.jpg

....now after a 7 hour turn around today from Delta and $800.00 cash, I have a running driving 73' Dodge dually with a working dump bed. So the plan is pull the dump bed off and place it on the 73' J4800. Bolt on the duals, mount the Vee plow, and have some fun this winter!!!!

Thank all.

Here's my focus vehicle. I know it's a Ford but I used it was a test to see if the bed would look with a two tone truck. I could've painted it match but I don't think it would've looked right. I plan to paint the bed black just like this one, I photoshoped the red on it.....
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/Emotions/CJ2K%20links/IFSJA%20ORG/Plow-Dumptruck-Copy.jpg
I always like the contrast between my two tone truck, black bumpers, black flairs, and black work bed in this picture......
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/mytruck-2.jpg

I know it's going to be a work truck but I wanted both a clean lined, well put together looking truck. I plan to re-undercoat the flares and re-paint the front bumper black at the same time as the dump bed. What do ya all think?

Really I would like to know

After measuring the dump bed is only 4" longer than the service box at 102" but it's almost a foot wider at 90". This should provide plenty of tire coverage. The frame of the dump box measures 38" wide by 90" long. With the J-trucks frames almost 10" wider I'm going to have to do something like Elliot did when he had to widen the framework of the flat bed be found.

If your truck is going to sit that high you better be thinking about ditching the 16's and going over to 19.5's for safety sake . . . Truck will be more stable, handle better, and you'll get better tread wear too . . .

I've thought of that and have already bought a set of 19.5 8 lug bread van rims just in case. I will probably use the 19.5's during the non-plowing season because the 16's with the 255's will grip better on the ice and snow.

when them 255's wear out these 19.5's might just grip better then the bread truck tires . . .

The first ones are the Treadwrites, correct? I've thought of those if I do it, mostly due to the price!! They are about to produce 315/70/17's on a BFG casing and the old MTR tread design!! Under $150...I'll take them for my Dodge Diesel!!

We had a beautiful day here and I was able to work on her a bit. Sorry about the pictures but my Blackberry is on it last leg since I dropped it in water.

I started by measuring and cutting the dump bed off the Dodge.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/Emotions/CJ2K%20links/IFSJA%20ORG/IMG00041-20101020-1643.jpg

Since the Dodge came with some very good condition 235/85/16's mounted on period split rims. I plan to use the chrome outers but for now I'm running these until my friends machine shop can get around to enlarging the Ford centers to fit the Dodge axle I'm using. I may use 19.5's in the future but for now I have these and will run them for a year or more.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/COLOJEEPGUY2K/Emotions/CJ2K%20links/IFSJA%20ORG/IMG00039-20101020-1642.jpg

I not sure if I said this before but I plan to run two tanks. The rear tank is out of a 1985 fuel tank. I believe its 35-38 gallons.
