My son and I recently put heavy duty 8 lug axles from a 74 j4000 under his 70 gladiator.
while this was pretty straight forward, one problem we encountered is the pitman arm seems to long. when the suspension flexs It rubs the tie rod that connects the two wheels. Any one know of a source for shortened pitman arms? Is it a bad idea to cut a chunk out and weld back together? seems like it to me.

Yeah.. bad idea.... they are cast... high carbon content. Haven't heard of a 'stubby' pitman either... gotta be another way.... you could go with a high steering conversion... is the axle a Dana 60?

This is often the problem with high steer pitman arms. I had to shorten the stock CJ arm because I couldn't use wagoneer and CJ also was to long. I shortened 7/8" but there was room on the CJ, not sure on the FSJ. Anyway, I'm sure one of the hysteer makers have ur appication, tricounty, dynatrac, parts mikes maybe.....

The axle is a heavy duty dana 44, dana 60 in the rear. We thought of moving the steering box forward but thats not so easy. only need a 1/4 inch or so. Panther do you have any links to those guys?

www.partsmike.net (http://www.partsmike.net) has high steer arms for 44's as long as you have a flattop knuckle and not the rounded style...
Go to my website (link in sig) and look under the high steering conversion...you wouldn't need the 3" BDS spacer I have, but everything else should work.... I got all my parts from Parts Mike...

http://tricountygear.com/ it's not on their site but I know they make shorter length pitman arms.
http://dynatrac.com/ I believe dynatrac does the same
And of coarse the link RB gave yeah. Parts mike also has a very busy message board, so maybe you could post a question there with some ideas
