Let me introduce myself, seeing as I'm new to the forum...

I live in southern NJ and have 2 XJ's. My fiancee drives the '01 Limited, and I have a '97 Sport that I recently rolled in Tellico and now use offroad only. I'm purchasing a '77 J-10 Honcho tomorrow to drive daily and tow with (and eventually restore & show), and I have a few questions about it.

It has the 360 4-barrel, what power & torque is this mill rated at?

It says quadratrac on it, but has been converted to manual hubs... the transfer case is a twin-stick and the seller said it is a D-20. What do I actually have here?

The rear is a D-44... would this hold up to a 401 transplant eventually?

The TH400 is a sturdy tranny, as far as I know, so that should be okay.

Thanks for the help!

:D

WELCOME to the best place for FSJ info and just good friends. Look HERE (http://www.froadin.com/index2.html) for production torque and HP specs. If your TCase is twin stick, then I'm pretty sure it's a Dana 20. The 44 should handle a 401 no problem, unless you plan on getting pretty radical with torque and HP and doing some extreme rock crawling. Since I'm guessing you're new to SJ's, this is just the beginning... ;)

Whoa, back up, if it has a twin stick in it then one of two things has happened. Either it has a Dana 20 which has been converted to a twin shifter from a Dana 18 or it could just be a Dana 18. You can tell by looking underneath. The D18 is a right hand output shaft and the D20 comes out the back. Both cases are very tough however the 18 may not stack up to a built 401 if it has the small shaft in it. Only way to tell is for it to be torn down. Oh and welcome to the list. J20

I decided to pass on the Honcho... it had too much rust for the price the seller was aking, and he wouldn't come down to anywhere near Kelly Blue Book value. However, there is an '84 6-cyl J-10 that I am considering... it is completely stock which gives me a clean slate to work from.

I'll get one yet, I promise.
