I was driving down the road today while it was raining and i splashed through a somewhat deep puddle. I stopped by a friends for about 5 min and then went back out and it started fine. on my way up the hill on his street it suddenly started bogging and then died. It was acting like it was out of gas so i put 5 gal in but it still wont start. I think it may have something to do with the water that splashed in my hood scoop while crossing the large puddle but im not sure. any help is greatly apprecieated

Do you have a points-type distibutor? I used to have a lot of problems when I had points going through puddles. Went to a pertronix electronic ignition conversion and it cleared that up. Spray some WD-40 on the cap and coil and see if that helps. May have to remove dist. cap and spray some inside also.

Yep! If you hydrolocked your engine (I betting that's what you're afraid you did) your engine would have stopped running, right then, and not started again. Either the force of the water hitting stuff under the hood knocked something loose, like a fuel line (doubtful) or water is shorting out your ignition system. It doesn't take much water to short out the ignition. Dry off every electical connection from the ignition coil to the plug wires and it should start and run fine ( alittle WD40 wouldn't hurt).

Pull out a spark plug and see if you are getting a spark while cranking. Even with 12" of lift, if a lot of water got in your hood scoop to your carb, you may have a bigger problem.

If you hydro-locked your engine woudl have instantly stalled and never started again (i rarely see an engine start after seeing one hydrolock, normally bent rods and such)
But yeah, I would check the distributer. I havent ever gotten water in my points distributer, I have a nice tight fit, you can add a ring of foam also to help, the little door should be facing back twards the engine, so it shouldent get water through there to easily.
You may want to work out a by-pass for the hood scoup for the rainy months. So it draws air from the engine compartment, and not from the top of the hood.

update...I went and dried all of the stuff out(distributor cap, coil, carb area) and nothing happened. I removed the air filter and proppped my carb open for a little while and then closed it again. when I went and turned the key I held the gas down a little bit and it started and fired for about 20 sec. but it was bogging down every time I pushed the accelerator. I havent gotten it to start again since then......it sounds like it wants to go but it just wont

check your dipstick for water & such, replace if necessary. spray starting fluid into the carb as a friend cranks it over & holds it cranked while you try to get it running, maybe it'll burn whatever out, or get your attention.

Red Rhino: i dont recalll if PC put ann electronic ignition into that or not. I know it has a later 70's drive train. If it does have electronic, you may have killed the ignition box. I would go and check for spark (hook a plug to the coil wire, ground on the intake or something, and turn over engine). If you get a good clean blue spark, its not that, but if its erratic and yellow/orange then its your ignition. If spark is good, then something has happened with the carb.

sorry for all the nonsense. I didnt even notice that my fuel filter had become totally dry....followed fuel line to tank to discover fuel line was totally pinched shut. everything is fine now. thanks for all your help!

I was going to ask how the fuel filter looked. How did the wire get pinched off?

when i hit the puddle it splashed real hard against the tank and slid it back about 1/2 inch and pulled the line against the frame
