I went and looked at a 85 AMC Eagle with a 258/6 cylinder. It only has 74,000 original miles on it. The problem is it backfired through the carb and caused a small fire under the hood. It melted some vacume lines and hoses. The owner replaced the carb and started doing some of the hoses, he has a diagram for the wires and heater hoses and vacume lines. I heard it run but it was kinda missing. He said the vacume advance for the distributor might not be hooked up. Some heater hoses were leaking, he replaced the valve cover with a used one from the junk yard along with the carb. Do you think that this would be hard to fix? He is wanting $700 for it. What do you think?
Thanks,
Rick

wagon?sedan?camback? sx4? i personally prolly wouldnt pay $700 for a sedan,unless it was in exceptionally nice shape,but thats just a personal opinion. a wagon is a very useful 4wd sport/utility type vehicle-the 1st,despite what subaru says ;)

the camback and sx4 are rarer version and worth fixing up alittle casue of their oddball "cool factor"

your engnie miss is likely due to a crappy carter feed back carb and/or vaccum leaks. it souldnt be too ard to smooth it out with a tune up and some new lines.

in 85 the 258 in the eagle shares the same potentially hazardous plastic valvecover as the fsj and cj. if you like the car and plan on keeping it awhile, repalce the plastic valvecover with a good aftermarket aluminum one to reduce the future risk for potential fires

feel free to let me kow if you have further amc eagle questions smile.gif

It is the sedan. It is rust free on the outside, nice paint, Interior needs a headliner, speaker covers are broke, and trim inside back door between the rear door and the back window is broken. It is pretty clean. I was thinking of the wagon model myself.

i'm not sure why scotty doesn't like the sedans. personally i think the wagons are the worst, but that's just me. my roomate has 2 sx4s and loves them. they are pretty kewl IMO.

the carter carb is a POS, but easily replaceable. Same with the plastic valve cover, the after market ones can be had not to much, and greatly reduces the amount of problems.

$700 doesn't sound too bad for one that isn't rusty.

the only place to find trim peices that I know of is the junkyard!!

good luck.

never said i didnt like the sedans,i just like the wagone,sx4s and cambacks better. i have always been that way, tho,id rather have a wagon or a pickup, sor soemting with a hatch rather than a trunk.

just try and haul an engine and trasnmission in the trunk or backseat of a sedan ;)

i wheeled an 80 for a couple of years before i got my GW. as a matter of fact, the GW was supposed to be an axle donor to swap in a solid front axle. ive still got it,but it needs a rear end,an engine, tranny, xfer cse,and a solid front axle smile.gif the IFS is toast, and the rear has s spun hub(2 piece axle)

some day i will fix him
