The carpet in my 79 looked pretty bad so I started pulling it out this afternoon. Unfortunately, there weren't any floorboards underneath. I expected holes, but seriously, it's the worst I've ever owned. I can nearly escape out the driver's footwell. :banghead: This is putting a serious dampener on my love for this truck. There really wasn't much rust anywhere else on it. I'm kinda just rant/rambling here but ****....

plugged up drain holes causes the water to come in around the kick panels and other areas and the carpet just holds the moisture...major flaw with our rigs. Throw salt water from winter melt off into the mix and you have the perfect storm of metal eating destruction.
There are several posts with solutions/stop gaps/preventive maintenance to slow and/or stop that from happening, and also a lot of good posts for replacing the floors.

I know what you mean, when I pulled the "non-orginal" carpet out of my old WT cherokee, my floor boards were patched up with realtor and street signs held on by rivets and really poor welds, soon after I sold it before i could even tackle the floorboards, also the carpet had been some type of outdoor carpet you get at home improvement store, on top of a bunch of door mats,

I hear you, if it wasn't for my carpet I could drive flinstone style in my 89 wagoneer.

Looks alot like mine that came from rhode island. Just patch them, throw down some new carpet and call it a day.

I went through this too.... OBX makes great fitting replacement floorpan patches.. very affordable. Takes some labor, but it fixes it !
Have fun !

Mine was far rustier on the driver's side than the passenger.

At least as disturbing, what I found under the back seat;

:huh: Where's the rust at?
I still see the trans tunnel, and it looks like your a/b pillars are still attached.
