Just lying under the Jeep again for no particular reason (I tend to do that quite a bit now). I decided to find where the oil filler plug on the rear diff was to change the gear oil. I couldn't find it but I did find "4.53" stamped on top of the diff housing. Does that mean I have 4.53 gears in there and where the heck is the filler plug???

You need to lay a wee bit farther under the Jeep to see the fill plug. Crawling under it just far enough to escape the ol'lady for a few moments ain't far enough to see it... ;)
It's not in the cover but on the forward/driver side of the housing. Don't know what those numbers mean but they aren't the ratio. The ratio is a letter code; B for 3.31's or D for 2.73's stamped into the pass side boss next to the dowel hole.

I was just replacing a leaky gasket and was wondering how much fluid the rear end needs? Any help is appreciated.

I believe the Chilton's says 5.5 pints (About 2.5 bottles). The book tells you to fill it until it starts dripping out the fill plug hole.
