View Full Version : More stroker woes

Ok. We got the stroker running and broke the cam in. Seemed to run ok. Need to tune it in a bit still, though.

The problem is that my starter decided to eat the ring gear on my flywheel again. I've had it this time and I'm not going to get another starter from my normal parts store. This is like number 5 or so and I've had enough.

So...anybody have any recomendations on where to get a good starter? New would be prefered but something tells me I can't get new. And mean green is too expensive.

Thanks,
Anthony

Try shimming the starter out from the flywheel. Chevy's have such a problem with alignment that they use shims from the factory to correct it.

Shimming isn't the problem. The starter is where it needs to be. The bearing in the nose-cone keeps going out and the bendix ends up slapping around and doesn't mesh with the flywheel enough. Then it eats my ring gear.

just break down and get one from Ford..it is a motorcraft starter..get a brand new one..they will last for years..if not get a mean green or something like that...

I just put in a new starter (from AZ - such an easy R&R the lifetime warranty is worth it) as the bendex had failed. This is an 87 and the starter was original. Unless the compression in that motor is high and the stock starter can't handle that then I suspect that if you are destroying the nose bushings in 5 starters something other than cheap rebuilds is causing that to happen. It is possible that it the cheap rebuilds but double check everything else also.
