I was wondering if I should try and paint my exhaust manifolds while the engine is out. They seem to be pretty rusty though I'm sure it is only the normal surface rust. Should I even bother trying to clean them up?

Also, I was surprised at how easily the manifolds unbolted from the heads, I figured they would be torqued down tighter than they were. Luckily I haven't had even the slightest leak in that area.

Peace be with you.

If you want them pretty for just a little while. The paint will not last long on exhaust manifolds. They will probably look even worse once the paint starts to fade.

What about the high temp paint for engines/headers?

I've had pretty good luck with wire brushing them, spray with engine cleaner, wash off, let dry in sun, then use hi-temp STOVE PAINT on them, lasts quite some time. Use a few coats.

I also use stove blacking paint on MC exhausts and it's good for a year and then it needs recoating more from scrathes and abrasion on a bike. It's easy to do though. It's NOT a rust proofing so the headers need to be clean metal before you put it on.
So far as your headers bolts being surprisingly loose...don't be surprised cause you'll be re-torquing them forever. Welcome to the world of tube headers smile.gif There are special bolts/lock available now that supposidly cure that prob but I've never used them. I've had my years of header hassles and avoid them like the plague now a days.
