I've looked around here for a while, but havent had much problem with my jeep until recently. I have an 81 Wagoneer limited with the 360 in it. I'm not the most mechanically minded man on the face of the earth, but I can get around it pretty well. The last month or so I've noticed a few things. First of all, when I first start it up it will run fine, but when I shift it into drive or reverse it will stall out. Secondly when I am getting on the on ramp for the interstate and give it a fair amount of gas it will vapor lock and as soon as I let off it runs fine and I have to accelerate at a much slower rate. Any ideas questions or anyone in the Nashville area who would want to help a newbie out. Oh and also, looking for someone who does good body work and painting in this area if anyone knows. THanks!

Could also be a sticky choke leading to an overly rich fuel-air mix causing the engine to load up when you hammer it. Can check this by letting the Wag warm up and seeing if the choke is completely open.

I have said it before and I'll say it again: Vapor lock is like Bigfoot, everybody has heard of it, but how real is it? Just like Bigfoot, some people swear it's real but I don't believe it.
I drive around in one of the hottest places on earth (Phoenix, AZ) and I have never experienced it in over 15 years of driving here, and it gets near and even sometimes over 120 degrees.
If you are experiencing stalling when you put it into gear or push the gas pedal down far then you have either a completely shot carb or one in need of serious carb adjustment. I wouldn't concern myself too much with vapor lock.

I would suggest looking at your catalytic converter (if equipped). It sounds like the insides of the muffler or converter are coming apart and blocking your tailpipe. When this happens, it can stall the vehicle. Also, when it's cold, the broken chunks are smaller, and allow exhaust gases to pass through. Once it heats up, though, the chunks expand, and any increase in the airflow helps the chunks block the tailpipe.
Just a few thoughts. Hope this helps.
