Living in Portland, Or. my `79 Cherokee has to be tested every two years. After failing the test twice for being too rich I noticed that it's being tested as a 4.2 ltr 6 cyl. Since I have a 360 shouldn't these tests be invalid? This shows a rich running I6. Almost bought a new catalytic converter. Or does the number of cylinders matter?

it will matter as 6 cylinders will not put out as much volume as 8 cyclinders.....but pointing out to the testers that they are idiots and cannot test it correctly probably will not help the cause....

WOW, and I thought our techs were bad...no way that is a valid test.

I'd demand a refund since they can't test your vehicle correctly, and go elsewhere.

I hope you didn't end up on a gross polluter list like we have here-if that's the case I'd most definitely take whatever action is necessary.

they may be going by the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Did you vehicle have a I6 at 1 time? you may need to point this out that the engine has been changed. However this may open up a whole new can-o-worms.:(

I'm not sure if engine type make a difference. Basically, it failed the emission. I've had many failures with my v8 1989 Grand Wagoneer.

My truck is tested as a 360 even though the VIN shows a 258. I just tell them it's a 360 and they're like "ok". Jersey is every two years to and I had to replace my cat converter (which was shot) in order to pass the sniffer.
