I really need some j20 AXLES not the whole truck (I already have my eyes on a set from a member here) and I think this one looks nice enough to keep whole so maybe this could be FSJ 2?

Convince me!

A 350 with a stick for $700? I'd be on that in a heartbeat!

I have a call into the guy... I do kind of wanna try wheeling a stick to see which I prefer (I prefer manuals for cars but not sure about 4x4s). As for the 350... I was assuming he MEANT 360... Am I missing something?

Buick 350s were available from '68 to '71, (special order only in '71)

So, it could be an AMC 360, or it could be a Buick 350.

I'm no expert on J trucks, maybe someone else here can verify. Probably a letter in the VIN would tell you which engine it came with originally.
From the tech section:

7th Digit - Engine Code
6 6-258
7 6-258 Smog
9 V8-304, V8-350, V8-360 Smog

8th thru 13th Digit - Sequential Serial Number
6-258 Engine 400,001-499,999
V8-304 Engine 500,001-599,999
V8-350 Engine 300,001-399,999
V8-360 Engine 600,001-699,999

Oh, and I prefer 'wheeling with a stick. Many others don't.

Newer style dash ('73-up) and steering wheel, probably '78 model.

yeah, thats not a j20. since its a 71 its a gladiator with a closed front d44 axle and some version of a d60 or a 44. those early axles to me, arn't worth swapping. j20 was 74-87.

I agree with Torndao230. It's not a 71 and it does look like it has 8 lug axles so it probably is a J20.

The razor grill is probably off a '71 though because it has a badge in the lower right corner.

Looks like a decent truck. I'd grab it.

Just talked to the guy on the phone... Says it IS a 71 and it does have 8 lug axles... Assures me that they were available then. The cab is from a 78 (hence the newer dash) but he has owned the truck since it was new... Says the engine is the buick 350 and nothing wrong with it to keep it from being driven home.

They guy was really friendly and SOUNDED like he new all about FSJs... He was talking about what years they came out with different grills/body styles etc... Also he has owned it since it was new.. He purchased it off a dealer lot in 71.

So... Is the guy lying/wrong or WERE j20s availaiable in 71? Also is the 350 a decent engine?

as far as i know they were still gladiators (j-2000/j-4000) in 71. also, not sure, but dont think 8 lug axles were used in 71, either.

The J20 designation came in '74. From the pics it looks like more than the cab was swapped, but its hard to tell.

nothing wrong with it to keep it from being driven home.
It sure has been sitting in that spot for a while.

Sounds like the guy has no idea what he is talking about. NO Jeep truck ever had a GVW of 9200lbs. Ever. Highest they went was 8600lbs for dually's and 8400lbs for J20's which did not come about untill 1974.

Also, in 71 you COULD get 8 lug axles. In the form of a J4800 8000lb GVW Camper Truck.

The front will be a closed knuckle Dana 44 with 4.10's larger spindles (then the 5 lug trucks), bearings, 8 lug hub and larger 12x2 1/8" brakes. You can see in the pics it still has the stock Warn M175 locking hubs.

The rear would be a full floating Dana 60 with the same size brakes.

These axles have 1/2" wheel studs.

Could also be a 73, that would give the newer interior (first year) and still be a J4800, but doesn't explain the Buick 350. If that's what it really is.

Hmm... This sounds fishy... You would think if he really owned it from day 1 he would know what he bought... Then again I guess not.

Forgot to mention it will have drum brakes all around if it's a 71-73.

Go look at it, I think that is the only way you will know what it is, but I would bet money it's a 71-73 J4000 Camper Truck.

Yeah, something fishy there.
If he's owned it since new, he should be able to tell you why it has a late model dash as others have said.

He should also know it's not a 71 J20, since there is no such thing

Looks like a decent deal though unless it's all bondo

Um... I THOUGHT that I mentioned that he told me the cab was swapped from a 78... Looks like I forgot.

I inquired about this truck also a few weeks ago. I was interested in the drivetrain mostly also but it seems to nice to carve up:D

I have a bunch of other pics they sent me from it if you want to see them. I decided I wasn't going to mess with it though it does seem like a good deal.

Here is the link to the thread I started on it:

I too was unsure about the Buick 350 but they were available in '71. They sent me pics of the engine bay and it is a 350. The consensus seems to be that the 9200GVWR is impossible. Another thing the guy told me was that it has fiberglass fenders on it...which i didn't realize were available until recently.

I think that you did mention it, but with everything else that is wrong with his listing I'd find it hard to believe anything he says.

I would love to see the pics.. duncanstives@hotmail.com
Thanks:

The the guy who said he could stop by and take a look at it... Thanks for the offer and I will defineitely take you up on it in a couple weeks if he still has the truck... Can't afford it until then so no need to waste other peoples time since it might sell before I can buy it.
