View Full Version : What does Select Track mean?

I was cleaning up today and found the original dealer sheet on my waggy. It says it has the tow package and it states it has Select Track with an axel ratio of 3.31.
What is this? Is this a Limited Slip.? I'm going to change the oil in the diffs and would have to add an additive for the LSD. Would any additive work or do I need to use a special kind?
3.31 what a surprise. Sure beats the 2.75 (I think) that I thought I had. :D

IIRC it means it had a part time transfer case like a NP208, which would be very helpful when towing.:D

Yes tow package with 3:31 gears means most likely you have LSD meaning when you change your fluid you need to use a synthetic brand of diff fluid or and LSD additive
also that means you get the large trans cooler sweet

Very sorry but these came with NP229 with the vacuum control switch

Select trak is the Np229 or 228 I believe. The 3:31 ratio doesn't mean you have limited slip. Limited slip is an option. I have 3:31, comes with towing package. I do not have limited slip:mad: .

Barry is correct. Same as mine, NP229,3.31, no factory limited slip.

Yes, Selec Trac refers to the t-case. They used that name on the optional t-case for XJ Cherokees, too (NP241?) Basically, I think it's their trade name for a 4WD you can use full-time.
As far as the limited slip, I had a '90 GW with tow package and LSD; it had a sticker in the glove box that said it had LSD. My '89 with tow package does not have it.

It is not part of the towing package but a separate option that was available for towing package equipped FSJs.

I'm 2 for 3 out of the Wagoneers i've owned. My '89 and the '91 I parted, both of them had the 3.31's and LS with towing package and big azz trans cooler. The 1 that didn't was a base model '82 with the 258/176/208.

So, what are some things to look for to identify if you have a tow package or a LSD? I have the NP 228 and would like to know if it has the LSD option as I would have to be more careful what I fill the xfer case with?

The LSD is the rear differential, not in the transfer case. It would make a difference what you put in the differential.

Duh, I am dumb.... Sorry for the stupid question, but how do you tell if you have the LSD or not? Is there an easy way?

If you jack up the rear end and spin one of the tires the other should also spin the same way. It may take a few rotations for the other tire to grab depending how worn out the clutches are. If they spin different directions then it is an open diff.

Because the limited slip diffs that were available in these rigs from the factory were so weak, the only real way to be sure is to pull the rear cover off and look. A worn out LSD can act like an open diff and an open diff with thick, cold lube in it can act like a worn out LSD.

select-trac = AWD or "full time" 4wd. Examples are 228/229 FSJ or 242 in the XJ
command-trac = part-time 4wd like the 208 in the FSJ or the 231 in the XJ. They never put the 241 in the XJ, but 6-spd KJ's got them.

I had the wag up on stands the other day doing an exhaust job. I spun the left rear wheel and the right rear spun the opposite direction. I was thinking to myself that that means something but I wasn't sure what.
So having an open diff would facilitate me adding an Aussie locker or something like that? :drivin:

For best results in offroad traction install a locker! :D

So the general consensus is although I have a Dana 44 with a 3.31 gear ratio it doesn't necessarily mean I have an LSD? And the fact that when I rotate a rear wheel one direction and the other wheel rotates the other direction would most likely mean I do not have the LSD.
Oh yea, and Select track has to do with my transfer case and that I can run full time in 4x4 ad infinitum. :fsj:
