Hello all, I have just about completed the rebuild of my first automatic transmission (727 out of a 85 SJ). All I have left to do is reattach the little cylinder to the end of the parking break rod and adjust the bands. I was gonna follow the manual I have, but a guy from another board I visit told me that he rebuilt 2 seperate 727's and when he went to drive them the reverse band burned up after a few feet. Obviously I would like to avoid that happening to me, so I figured I would see what method the 727 guru's on here use. My 727 is a non-lockup and I replaced all seals and clutches (metal and fiber) and some bushings. I didn't open the valve body up. This transmission worked when removed but I am going to wheel it so I wanted piece of mind (and rebuilding it was interesting). I did take it to a tranny shop to get one of the clutch housings apart, the one with all the little springs.

It wasn't too bad, you need a couple sets of snap ring pliers, a jar of petroleum jelly (for the seals, a feeler guage, dial indicator, various sockets, and a inch lb and ft lb torque wrench. One of the clutch drums need to be taken by a tranny shop to get to the seals underneath (has 11 little springs keeping you from having any chance of getting the snap ring back in). If you change the bushings you will need a couple of brass drifts and a seal and bearing driver set. So basically if you are set up to do diffs you can do a 727 :D . The kit I bought was about $60, $9 for a seal that wasn't included and $5 for labor at the tranny shop.
As for the bands I followed the instructions in the manul but noticed that the adjuster screws turned when I tightened the lock nuts. Any way to prevent that?

you have to hold the screws while you tighten the nuts
