View Full Version : Questions from a newbie (89 GW)

Just got an 89 Grand Wagoneer last Friday. Forgot how nice it is to have a V8. (also forgot the mileage).
Anyway, I have been lurking here last week and thought that this would be the best place to help get aquianted with my new rig.
#1 - what is the best shop manual for the at home DIY type? I got a used Chilton #8143 Wagoneer/Comanche/Cherokee 84 - 91 manual, but is seems almost exclusively 4 and 6 cyl. Did I buy the wrong one?
#2 - the oil presure guage is pegged above 60 from the minute I turn the key - (and stays there). What's the best way to tackle this. If it is the sending unit any idea as to how much they run?
#3 - The Wag has 106 original and though pings alot even with 92 octane, seems to run strong and smooth. I will investigate the "Spark Knock" repair notes and it sounds like it is a candidate for that proceedure. Is there anything else I should do as a new owner that would be good? I see mention of disconnecting the air injection system and also mention of going through all the emission control and vacuum lines to be preventative. Would this be a good project?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you bought a manual for little Jeeps(XJ). Pretty much, I'd get a Chiltons and a Haynes manual. Each has their spots where they get a little vague, so the other picks up the slack in that case. Oh yeah, Welcome aboard! You'll find that this is really a great resource for all your Jeep needs.

Welcome to the forum!
The Haynes manual that'll be of use to you will be #50029 - Wagoneer & Pick-up 72-91
The reason your gauge is pegged out is because its not plugged in, or the wire may have broken off... it is a resistance gauge. When the wire isn't attached to the sender unit, it'll cause resistance making the gauge register. Otherwise it'll be pegged out.
Your pinging problems seem to be remedied commonly with a timing check. 12 degrees BTDC, but as the motor gets older, people tend to advance it a little bit. I think because the timing chain stretches a little.

you have, without a doubt, found the world's best information resource for full size jeeps! and the best group of people on the web! no flames here. ever!
i would try the following things:
1: change all fluids/filters/sparkplugs/pcv valve
2: check and/or change all vacuum hoses per the routing diagram
3: get the correct manual. its not perfect, but its close enough
4: check the timing and the vacuum advance diaphram for leakage. it should hold a vacuum
5: post any questions here for answers that you cant find in the book
6: enjoy your new toy!

welcome Darin,
As for the pinging problem, search the threads for this subject. There is a fix that changes the egr valve and bypasses some of the vacum delay valves I think.
If it turns out you need a new vac advance, good luck finding one. I had to replace the entire distributor to get one.(it was only $50).
good luck

i found a vac advance unit, but it cost more than a rebuilt distributor, so i bought the distrib.

welcome to the group Darin...
suggest you trace the wire that runs from your oil pressure sending unit back to the dash... mine had a break in it and everytime I moved the wire bundle that it was in, the guage started working again until the bundle shifted...

The best shop manual will be the Chrysler-produced '89 Jeep (all-models) shop manual.
In addition to the other notes about a break in the wire, I can add that a pegged needle can also result from a bad sending-unit itself (mine was rusted out).
For the pinging, of course you'll need to replace all vacuum lines and verify that they are routed properly (10:1 odds that they aren't). Then (with the engine cold) push up on the underside of the EGR valve (through the little windows on the underside of the canister) to ensure that it operates freely. If you can't get it to move freely, then the spark-knock kit may be for you. Don't unhook any of the emissions equipment unless you have a good reason to.
