i have an 82 j-10 and the ashtray just fall in the dash and i was wondering what holds the ashtray on the track? there is a metal bracket under the dash but there seems to be something missing because there are groves in either side of the bracket where a ball or guide should run. if there is a guide missing what would be a good source for the part.
thanks dan

Balls, you need balls.
I will check if I have the set up. If not, many here with parts rigs should have it. I don't believe they changed during the 20some years or so that that dash was made.

it is a pretty unique set-up. I'll never forget the day i was cleaning my wag and found my balls. Boy was I surprised, I spent the nexy ten minutes polishing my balls so they would slip into the groove more freely. Should I be regularly inspecting and lubing my balls?

i usually let someone else lube them, don't want that all over my hands

this one should work, there is a bracket that holds the balls onto the tray and they slide on rails in dash

Noticed the JP mag, I can only asume that you own a little jeep since they don't do anything usefull for FSJ's. I just get irritated when mine comes in the mail at all the things that i can't do.
